4년 여의 세월이 흐른 지금, 이들은 또 한번 파격적인 변신을 시도한 새 앨범과 함께

음악 신으로 돌아왔다. 앨범 제목 ‘American Idiot’, 피묻은 수류탄을 상징하는 일러스트가 담긴 재킷은 미국민들을 위험으로 몰아넣고 있는 부시 행정부, 그리고 새로운 미디어에 의해

통제당하며 집단 히스테리에 빠져있는 미국 사회에 대한 거침없는 비판과 독설을 상징한다.
이처럼 이들의 새 앨범은 노랫말과 이미지로만 보자면 전에 없이 강력한 메시지를 담아내고 있어 본격 펑크 밴드의 이미지를 되찾고 있는 느낌이다.

 

첫 싱글 ‘American Idiot’은 단순 반복되는펑크의 이념에 충실한 고감도 에너지로 충만한 곡으로 예전의 생기넘치는 사운드를 되찾은 듯 하다. 그러면서도 이들의 장기였던 팝적 감각이 여전히 살아있어 대중성 또한 잃지 않고 있다. 과거 프로듀서로 이들의 앨범에 꾸준히 함께 했던

롭 카발로가 모습을 나타내고 있는 것도 눈여겨 볼 대목이다.
